From 2010 to 2014, I was involved in a personal relationship in which I was abusive to my partner. I will not identify this person by name for the sake of protecting their privacy. I acknowledge the harm I did for a variety of reasons, many of which were a result of untreated trauma and mental illness on my part, which I have subsequently begun to deal with via therapy and treatment. This does not excuse the wrong I have done, but serves as a concrete step in attempting to not add to the pain already caused by repeating actions that I deeply regret. I am also under no illusion that I expect forgiveness, which is solely the purview of the victim – this statement is simply one of accountability.
